Blessed Are Those Who Mourn (Matthew 5:4)

December 12th, 2029

Thanks for being here.

  • “Blessed are those who mourn, for they will be comforted.” (Matthew 5:4)
  • The word “mourn” here carries the idea of being cut deeply to the heart. It is so dark, so painful that, as Jim Samra puts it, that it can feel like one’s soul is being ripped in two.
  • According to Scripture, there are three main reasons why we mourn:
  1. We mourn the destruction caused by sin.
  2. We mourn the brokenness of the world.
  3. We mourn the reality of death.
  • Properly mourning and grieving our sin, our suffering, and death will not be easy. In fact, it will be the hardest work you will ever do. But Jesus says if you will do this painful work of mourning it, you will be blessed. How will you be blessed? Because God comforts the mourning!
  • Psalm 34:18: “The Lord is close to the brokenhearted and saves those who are crushed in spirit.”
  • God is always close…but he promises to be even closer in times of profound pain.
  • Or when we acknowledge and grieve our sin, we can take comfort that God will forgive us, for He promises in Hebrews 8:12: “For I will forgive their wickedness and will remember their sins no more.” And then again in Micah 7:19: “You will again have compassion on us; you will tread our sins underfoot and hurl all our iniquities into the depths of the sea.”
